Carolyn Yarnell was born in Los Angeles and raised in Mariposa, California. She did her undergraduate work at the San Francisco Conservatory. Carolyn then went on to Yale for her graduate work.
Carolyn Yarnell has been described as a composer of large Orchestral and Chamber works which is romantically emotive or rentlessly angry by turns. Her first piece performed was in 1984 at Davies Hall. She liked this piece but decided to really develop the ideas and composed her favorite piece "Commission by Tanglewood" which she finished in 1991. Oliver Neston conducted the fourth and fifth movements of this piece. Her dream is to hear it all five movements played together because she feels it represents all of her ideas.
Carolyn never encountered any obstacles being a woman composer. Her trick was thinking of her self as a person, not a woman. Carolyn feels like she really has achieved success in her life. She likes to compose for orchestras but also does Chamber Music. Currently Carolyn composes and performs for the group Common Sense.
