Shelley has been playing guitar since she was fourteen. As soon as she learned to play, she began writing and creating her own music.
Being a woman in the music business has presented its challenges. She is insistent that she be respected as an instrumentalist first. She feels that when people relate to her more as a vocalist, she is not doing her job as one of the few female lead electric guitarists in the business.
"Shelley Doty may be that extra-mile women have to go so often to be accepted as well as men in the music business...it is also clear that Shelley Doty will be a big thing on her own someday soon, she is just that good," states Tim Lynch of Cyberworld.
Shelley takes a jazz attitude towards music in terms of improvising and letting creation happen spontaneously. She is an exciting performer, displaying incredible technique with deeply personal feeling.
Shelley was part of the well-known West Coast band Jambay doing improvisational rock and touring extensively for seven years. When Jambay members went their separate ways, Shelley created Howlin' Music, where she released her first CD, Opportunity, in March 1997. She recently collaborated with musician/producer Booker T. Jones, who produced and played on a demo of Shelley's electric material.
Shelley performs solo and with a full band. The Shelley Doty X-Tet is a talented group of rotating musicians with instruments such as bass, drums, and sax. In addition, she rocks out as lead guitarist for two world beat favorites, Pele JuJu and Bonfire Madigan.
Shelley is a wonder to behold. Her guitar alone will burn a hole in your heart, coupled with biting lyrics and veracious energy that brings both small venues and huge crowds to a standstill.
