Hi Phil,
Good to have you de-lurk and welcome!
Your didjeridu from Darwin is not necessarily a CI4, it depends who made it. I take it that it was bought at the Aboriginal Fine Arts Gallery?
The Cultural Indications Index (CI) Index that iDIDJ Australia established is not a perfect system but given that there haven't really been any real attempts by others to 'deconstruct' didgeridoos based on their origins and cultural integrity, it is still the best system around:
http://www.ididj.com.au/authenticity/label.html
Note that the CI Index is about education and giving consumers an informed choice when buying an instrument, it is not about quality per se. From the site, the notes say:
"... Note, however, that good quality product and ethical instrument makers can be found in these categories... many hobby craftsmen, in the USA and Europe for example, hand-make excellent quality didgeridoos from a variety of materials and methods and these can be purchased at a reasonable price. These craftsmen - and you'll find out who they are with some research - do not represent their creations as something they are not...".
Happy didjin'!
Guan
