[Didjeridu] A bloom in the St. Louis didjeridu desert.

David Blonski was actually in St. Louis, and did two concerts and a three hour class and workshop.  He'd been in Indianapolis, Indiana with his wife Nina at a labyrinth conference.   It turns out one of the worlds largest designers and installers of  labyrinths is here in St. Louis, and Dave had done some work on a couple of their installations, where he'd played for the workers during breaks in the work.      It was natural for him to stop here on his way back to California.     (Hi, David, if you still read these postings.   You'll get a separate e-mail.)

The concert Friday was wonderful, with a lot of variety -- many different didj'es,  flutes, drums and various other percussion instruments.    Holding it all together was an electronic loop recorder/player.    For one piece, he layed down a five (at least) layer background, starting with a very low didj, then successively adding drum, shaker, rattles, and a  Percussive Frog Rasp.   With that looping in the background, he played his flute.   

During some of his pieces, he projected images on the wall, many of them done by the late Peter Spoecker (see news article from 7/15/2005, search for "Peter").  Marvelous.

I was afraid the class would be too simple minded, since part of it was supposed to be an intro to didj playing, but as luck would have it, there were only four students and all could play pretty well.     The experience reawakened my interest in the didj, which has been somewhat dormant for the last year or two.   Now I'm all excited about trying to gather as many didj players from St. Louis and surrounds into a viable community.
If any of you didj listers are in the area, or know of any players  in the area, I'd appreciate getting  any kind of lead you have on them.   I'm retired now, and expect to spend a significant amount of time getting some blooms growing in the St. Louis Didjeridu Desert.
