Message-ID: <083059BF-75CE-4A5D-8E5C-AF67C986477F@gothpunk.com> Does anybody know of a Didj shop in Sydney that might be worth visiting ? As in indigenously owned/operated or with some sensitivity and ties to indigenous community(s) in Australia? I'm going to be doing some NGO work in Papua, New Guinea in September and my return trip to San Francisco includes a 1-day stayover in Sydney. If the schedule works out I was thinking it would be nice to do a bit of didge-shopping before heading home. I worked in Australia for a few months about 12 years ago and had some time at the end to tour the country but have not been able to get back since. So I'm excited to be able to get to spend even a little time back there. Didj-wise I'm looking for something that is playable, but doesn't have to be instrument quality. The ones I have I use mostly for meditation/trance-work and occasional jamming w/ friends. The old Didjbeat closed down a few years back now, but there's a shop right on the main tourist street mall to the beach at Manly owned by the nephew of Melina, former Didjbeat owner, and she helped them out. They might have some good stuff. The current name escapes me though, as it's been a few different names under different owners. But if you take the ferry to Manly and walk to the beach, it's the Aboriginal art shop on the right, can't miss it. That might be hard if you've got only a quick day, whereas Ulladulla is right in the city. There's probably others with sticks from other Aboriginal makers, but that's my memory of Yolngu yidaki resellers who are still in business. Or you could extend the stay long and fly up to visit Djalu for a day! ;-) Randin Graves ______________________________ film composer ? www.randingraves.com didjeridu music ? www.gingerroot.com rgraves at gingerroot.com On 02/08/2009, at 12:46 PM, Steve 'dillo Okay (Roadknight Mobility Labs) wrote: Does anybody know of a Didj shop in Sydney that might be worth visiting ? Cheers, Guan Hi everyone, Just to let you know that I've set up a Fundraiser Appeal for Darryl Dikarrnga Brown who is currently staying with iDIDJ Australia. We are collecting donations which you can make securely by Paypal on the following page: http://www.ididj.com.au/education/profiles/darrylfundraiserappeal.html If you've enjoyed the iDIDJ Australia YouTube channel and learnt something from Darryl through his expert demonstrations of mago playing, your humanitarianism and kindness would be most appreciated at this time of need. I know times are tough for everyone at the moment but let's get behind Darryl who has been so generous with his knowledge and expertise, and whose sharing has brought the mago closer to all of us wherever in the world we might be. Please forward this message through your network of family and friends, fellow didgeridoo enthusiasts, work colleagues, etc. Thank you. I have recently invented a new didge based musical instrument that I have called the Electric Medusa. It is a particular example of the more general concept of opendidge of which you can read more in the article that I have written and that you can find at http://martino.fluiditj.com/opendidge.html together with a small gallery of photos of some instruments. The video is on youtube http://www.youtube.com/martindidge any comments welcome:)) cheers, M Martin O'Loughlin http://www.fluiditj.com http://www.myspace.com/martinoloughlin From PHultquist at aol.com Sat Aug 22 18:40:16 2009 From: PHultquist at aol.com (PHultquist at aol.com) Date: Sat, 22 Aug 2009 21:40:16 EDT Subject: [Didjeridu] short notice performance Message-ID: Just got notice....Andrej Smeykal (didjeriduist extraordinaire from the Czech Republic) will be performing at 7pm Monday Aug 24 at 424 E Simpson St. in Lafayette, CO. On Saturday, Sept 5 (during Labor Day weekend) there is an "event" in Windyville, MO, about 40 miles NNE of Springfield, MO.?? The event link is http://www.som.org/NewPages/Newsite07/SOMNavigation/PreParliament.html This is a pre-parliament for the Dec. 2009 meeting in Melbourne, Australia of the Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions This group meets every few years.?? Since the main meeting is in Oz, they thought it would be appropriate to have a didj player open the ceremonies at the local "pre-event".?? Because Missouri is in the middle of the Great Midwest Didjeridu Desert,? I've volunteered for the job, even though it's 150 miles away. Seems like a long way to go to play for perhaps 5 minutes, but it should be interesting. I don't know if Mykul is still on the list, or if anyone remembers him.?? In any case, I'll be playing a wonderful Viikym which Mykul imported sometime in 1998. Be well, everyone, Dayv [[ For anyone new to the list since, oh, about 2002,? I use Dayv instead of Dave, as at the time I joined the list, there were already three or four Dave's who were active posters.?? Can't remember any but Dave Crowder at the moment.]] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
