The ignoble demise of Tower Records.
Funeral bouquets of plastic flowers will be manufactured for a dime apiece and retail at $18.99.

I copped a few things at the store in NYC when I was there in late
November - they were closing out - not a good selection, really - that
store used to be great (west village - lower Chelsea) and Zorn and many
others talked about how it was once well stocked with great selection
and knowledgeable employees - that wasn't the case the last few times I
went in there.
Mark at Amoeba says they put the listening stations in at the stores
because they know they have to compete with online situations where you
can listen to samples before you buy the product. He also told me they
are working to go online themselves - and will (soon?) have an online
version of their complete catalogue - they're looking for people to do
write ups on that catalogue - I told him I would be willing to supply
blurbs for the complete Em catalogue - perhaps it's something that other
local record labels and independent artists will want to do in
coordination with distribution through Amoeba) that will be positive in
that folks from out of town will be able to buy directly from them once
that gets set up.
More power to them, I say - they've been serving us well for decades (as
did Tower, I must say I have a little bit of nostalgia attached to them
- they were my main supplier throughout my childhood, along with a few
other notorious shops in the SF Valley: PooBahs, Be Bop, Tempo, etc...).

I went to the Emeryville store, pickings were very slim but I found a
Flying Luttenbachers and Mujician cd and a handful of DVDs, including
The Prefab People by Bela Tarr, great 1960's Hungarian social
realism, The Heart is Deceitful Above all Things, from the JT LeRoy
book, directed and starring Asia Argento, daughter of Dario Argento,
and Borsalino et Cie, with Alain Delon.
