Should be noted also that grotesque acts of self
mutilation, both mental and physical (using your idea
of witnessing the immolation as a form of mental
mutilation) have also long been a part of both
spirituality and art.

In fact, such things where at one time in the not too
distant past very public forms of entertainment, which
is even more grotesqu (IMHO).

considering they are going to publicly hang saddam
from the gallows (most likely) at this point, and with
our blessing and support (just as the official public
beheadings began as a form of execution in afghanistan
as soon as we installed the government their at the
fall of the taliban) are we really very far removed
from that?
