I'm originally from Chicago, and I'll note one additional thing I find
astonishing about Malachi's suicide. Namely, that even in the windy
city, his self-immolation generated almost no media coverage. The Sun
Times printed a few sentences about it, and the right wing Chicago
Tribune completely ignored it.
You may recall the powerful images o the Buddhist monks immolating
themselves during the Vietnam war. Due to world-wide media broadcast of
these images, it helped turn the tide of public sentiment against the
war. It is unlikely that Malachi's immolation will have any such effect.
My friend Bruno Johnson who owns the Okka disc label and has put out
some of Malachi's recordings, said Malachi sent him his Will, his keys
and some other info before he headed out and did the deed, taping his
own demise (a recordist/archivist up until the very end).
Sad and gruesome indeed. But no more so than the violence, pain and
suffering currently being inflicted daily upon people throughout the
middle east and the rest of the world, whether it be in the name of
religion, oil, or corporate/capitalist interests.
Peace.
