[NewMusic] Zorn-o-rama and recent shows

I'm in complete agreement with Tom. I've generally enjoyed Zorn's compositions (including his improv based game pieces) more than his purely improvised stuff, despite his incredible technique & solid ideas. I'd agree with Tom's assessment that it all sounded much the same. I wish that instead, I'd had the opportunity to see one of Mori's other bands (I've recently been getting into her recordings with Mephista, her trio with Sylvie Courvoisier (sp?) & Susie Ibarra), but all in all, her contributions were more compelling than his. Maybe it's because I've never seen Mori play. Maybe I've seen Zorn play one too many times, and am less shocked than I was as a college student wholly ignorant of 'new music'. Still, not a bad night of music, just not a very surprising one...

And 25 bucks for 40 minutes of music is a snow job, unless you are raising Charles Mingus from the grave or something...

There were a few of us from "the" scene there in a packed house at
the Jazz School. I had several reactions:

1. Both of them performed virtuosically and that was really exciting
for me to hear.
2. It was (to my ears) pretty much the same piece played several
times (that piece being: sax: aggressive attacks and amplitude with
disjunct lines, and some extended techniques (all clearly controlled
in a very good sense); laptop: rapid fire percussion samples played
in various layers across a stereo field with volume varying
dramatically both in terraced and sometimes continuous change, with
the degree of finesse equal to Zorn's playing.
3. I know Zorn's compositional work includes approaches I prefer to
what I heard him do that evening.
4. I know Mori's work does too, yet I was more engaged by what she
was up to that night.

So, I probably would have enjoyed the Sunday afternoon performance
better (chamber works) but after spending $25 for the 40 minute set
on Sat. I decided not to spend $32 on the concert on Sunday.

That's my $.02. Next?

Pax, -Tom
