Frequently I intend to write a little something about some of the things I've seen but always let it slide by. Generally I wish I would see more written on this list about what people have actually played locally. when I do see such stuff I usually rue not having gone. So here are a few of the most recent gems:

Alessandro Bosetti - voice and electronics
a beautiful combination of simple and sweet and complex and harsh "songs"
really interesting thinking behind all of it
 
Monday October 1 sfSound at ODC
James Tenney's "Critical Band"
a deep, rich, wonderfully alive shimmering textural tapestry realized with complete authority and directness witnessed by all too few
 
Thursday October 5 Luggage Store
Olumeyi Thomas - reeds and stuff
The best performance I have seen by Olumeyi - great range of sounds, nice clear thinking and shapes for his pieces, succintly presented
 
Saturday October 7 21 Grand
David Michalak and Reel Change with films
David's group worked with his own films as well as couple by Maya Deren. it was the first I had seen of the Maya Deren films and the second time for David's. The thought and rehersal time were well evident and made the films sparkle. The group with David on lap steel guitar, Andrew Voigt on flutes and saxes, Tom Nunn on his stuff and Carla Kihlsted and violins had a great cinematic range at time disappearing into the visuals and then rising with sonic spendor.

Wednesday October 11, 21 Grand
Theresa Wong, cello and Devin Hoff, bass
A great duet. Rich and sensitive allowing room for each other, supporting each other but mainly the flowering of many interesting ideas, textures and timbres.
 
Ok, these are quick sketches, but they were significant musical/artistic experiences for me.
