Me three. I saw him at both LSG and 21 Grand. I thought the music was
well developed. I enjoyed that he was working with pop music forms.
I'd like to see more of that around. If he wasn't already out of cds,
I would've bought one.
Performatively, it left a bit to be desired. Don't get me wrong, I
think producing songs/cd's is a craft that's separate from the craft
of performing live. It's hard to make a good cd from live recordings,
and it's also hard to take a well produced, multitracked song and
reproduce it faithfully live. The act of performing a single
instrument over pre-recorded tracks is a pet peeve of mine. If I see
Beck perform a solo show, I'd much rather see him play acoustic
versions of his songs than play over a cd of his backing tracks.
That said, he knew exactly what was going to come up on the recording,
and exactly at what moment, which gave me a funny reminder of Dream
Theatre. (Dream Theatre was a highly pedigreed prog/hair-metal band
that appeared just after hair metal went out of style in the 90's. A
friend of mine was really impressed by how complex their music and
guitar solos were, but was turned off when he saw them live, simply
because the live show was a note for note rote performance of the cd.)
Certainly not knocking Bosetti as a musician. He's got the chops, and
I was really impressed by where he was willing to go with his
recordings.
