I'll join the queue and chime in to say Breakfast of Champions and
Slaughterhouse 5 were the first two I came upon (in the early 70's, not
far behind Slusser for once) and they were truly inspiring. I was
already a reader, but those books got me even more excited about reading
and thinking. And yes David, the morality that washes over those
extremely entertaining and though-provoking books...where is it now?
I'll over look Chris' nag on Pynchon (because Against the Day, his new
book, ROCKS) - I'm sad to say I didn't even know there was a "Pynchon
list" - (but of course, everything awaits you in the online paradise).
But I think I read Crying of Lot 49 not long after Breakfast of
Champions - and both those books, along with Magister Ludi, somehow made
me very glad to be alive and able to read (in high school - a time when
many of us take a break from caring about the written word).
I'm always waxing nostalgic, so I don't even need to apologize, but
instead I'll say Goodnight Mother Night, watch your fingers in the Cat's
Cradle on the way to Tralfamadore.
Raise your glasses, mates...
