Hey, I'm not nagging on Pynchon (I'm with you re:
Against the Day, which may be my favorite of his
works), seeing as he's probably my favorite writer
ever. But I'd bet he'd be the first to admit that
Vonnegut is more concise.
PG:
I would have to agree - but I'm sure it has never been Pynchon's aim to
be "concise". His "Here Comes Everybody" approach, which he gleefully
inherited from Joyce, wouldn't stand for such foolishness.
And yeah: Against the Day, right?
I can't stop laughing...except on the pages when he doesn't want me to
laugh. And despite the fact he's writing about a time at the turn of the
19th and 20th century, he is certainly writing about the America we know
and love today...replete with corporate greed, political malaise,
"fecklessness", and other ignoble American traits.
CB:
The Pynchon list is quite wonderful & worthwhile,
though the level of flame wars on it make BA Newmus
seem like a diplomat's paradise.
PG:
Well, once I read your post I went right out and subscribed to it - I
look forward to dodging prosaic bullets with you in the near future.
