Subject: [NewMusic] Moe!'s show at 21G

Moe! put on a fun performance Friday -- a bit of a retrospective of
sorts, if you include the TVs and sock monkey. An excellent way to start
a westcoast tour...

There were some really lovely moments, as when he had the aluminum bat
stradling the electric guitar and snare drum, and he was using the
looping pedal to set up some grooves to play over. And he managed to
play everything he brought (as far as I could tell). In 15 minutes!

PG:
I'm really sorry I had to miss this one - I love Moe!'s solo shows!

I was over at 1510 Performance Space, playing the Jazz House's Free Jazz
Friday series with Bush of Ghosts, which was a nice time. Scott's
landlord has bestowed a nice Baldwin piano on the space (I'm not sure if
it's new or not - it looks really clean and new-ish), which is a great
improvement over the old piano...something to consider if you're looking
for a space to perform with a nice keyboard instrument. Scott sat in
with us, and the instrument (and the musician) sounded great.

Gino waxed:
Besides the wonderful sounds, the place smelled great at the end, with
all the smashed cassettes and tvs and guitars; puzzle pieces, plush
toys, junk metal, and other debris floating around; and fog-machine
fumes. Kind of like visiting a century-old automotive repair shop that
doubles as a day-care center, but has recently been looted. In a good
way.

PG:
This is all too much - I can't quite accept that I managed to miss 21
Grand smelling "great" (I can only imagine what exactly "great" means in
this context), and having practically grown up in a body shop, the idea
that I missed 21G looking like an auto shop brings on even more pain and
suffering.

Gino:
Then there was the fabulous Partch show the next night! Incredible
weekend for music.

PG:
Which I have already commented on, but I will say once again - yeah! -
that was a great evening of music. I'm so stoked my friend Vicky Ray is
playing in that group. I don't know if you know her work, but she's an
amazing pianist - she has performed Mantra and loads of other new music
works; she's worked with Boulez (OK, a bad word around here) and is a
fixture in the California EAR Unit. We went to school at USC together,
where I first heard her play the Bartok Sonata for 2 Pianos and
Percussion with Gloria Cheng (the other pianist)...an outstanding
performance.

Moving on: The Lost Trio played Red Hill Books in Bernal Heights
yesterday afternoon - a paying gig at a bookstore ($50 per musician, or
$75 in store credit)!

Remember the old "Dog Eared Books" days? - It's the same store manager.
I recommend slipping over there and talking to them about playing there.
They have a Sunday afternoon series (you play from 1 - 3 pm) - not sure
how "out" they're willing to go - but when we used to play at Dog Eared
Books back in the day, the sky was pretty much the limit (my favorite
gig there was playing with Richard Saunders and Michael Vatcher).
