Re: Matthew...

I guess it's a matter of having mourned a lot lately and I had perhaps
went over my quota of tears that day/week, but seeing Matthew on screen
at Noisy People made me very happy.

I feel like one of the high school kids in that recent film "Freedom
Writers", who says, "No, you don't get it! Ann Frank is dope because her
story lives!". That's how I felt when I saw the image on screen - I
cheered out loud, because Matthew was "preserved" in that way. It's a
beautiful thing.

Anyway, that's just my useless perspective - forgive me if it offends
anyone.

I don't really have much more footage of matthew. That was very early on

in my shooting of the film, and also very late in Matt's life: I think
it was about two weeks before his accident.

It may sound weird to say I'm happy that people cried and were sent back

into mourning by that segment -- but I actually think it's a very good
thing; mourning is good, remembering is good; I'm glad the film could
help that come up.

It was disturbing at first working with that footage, but, I'm sorry to
admit, after seeing the same images many many times, working with them
for hour after hour, it all tends to lose its impact. It's an
occupational hazard of media manipulation you have to work hard to guard

against (and obviously many filmmakers lose that battle, becoming
cynical and manipulative.)

For me, by the time the premiere came around, NoisyPeople in general had

as much juice in it as a thoroughly squeezed out orange peel. One
wonderful effect of showing it to everyone is bringing that emotion back

to life.
