oops - forgot to answer the thing on Noise Pancakes -
Noise Pancakes is a saturday brunch noise concert. A much less formal
affair than what I'm used to. Shows are often announced last minute,
but they're generally every 2 weeks or so. It's a good idea to have
someone who knows the series bring you to it your first time, as the
gateway is easy to miss, hard to get into, and hard to tell which
floor it's on. (They put a slip of paper at the front gate telling how
to buzz in, but they don't answer the phone all the time.)
But once you're in, it's really cool - someone makes pancakes, and
there's 4 or 5 very short sets of music, most commonly of the harsh
noise variety (most common instrument is arrays of guitar pedals). You
do need to bring your own juice or your mouth will get very dry. Most
commonly, it's held at ArtSF on 16th and Capp, across the street from
the Lab. The venue itself has sweeping views of downtown SF.
To find out when it's happening, sign up for the Brutalsfx list on
yahoo groups, and keep an eye out for posts by Grux, who appears on
the list as "agenerak".
There's also a local organization called Club Sandwich that puts on
shows of noise and other music at different venues in Oakland and SF.
