This comment is not meant as a criticism or attack, and I admire the great
skill and knowledge of the researchers, but I could hear the difference
between the stylus version and the IRENE version. There was a certain
throatiness and low-frequency aspect of the voice quality that appeared to
be lost in the voice of the female blues singer. Personally I prefer the
crackles and the original voice quality. The singer in the IRENE
recording sounds whiny, whereas there is a hint of a masculine expression
in her voice, a king of breaking of traditional gender boundaries, in the
original. Voice quality does have a component of semantic/semiotic
expression. If the old recording can be played back, one could place a
microphone in front of the speakers in which the original is played back,
and then the original can be re-recorded.
