yea, i would say its more like a meta-composition
or rules of engagement - totally NOT "anything can
happen"

Then jacob sayed:
It's the establishment of the rules of engagement that
allow for the ability to reach to new areas (or to the
anything can happen). If it's a new group, anything
can happen, but more likely you are going to spend
some time working out what the rules are. Still can
be some nice and suprising music, or it can be a lot
of noodling trying to establish something that never
gets established. A group that has played together a
lot evenutually (hopefully) figures out what the rules
are, and then hopefully works on pushing those
boundaries, otherwise they will probably stagnate. I
try to have a few working ensembles. After a few gigs
together then start mixing it up, throw something else
in, move in a new direction. My currently longest
running working ensemble is Yellowcake (with Looney
and Gino). We've done about 8 gigs over the course of
a few years, and at this point I feel like I REALLY
CAN DO ANYTHING with them (AND IT WILL WORK!) but
that's precisely because there is that strong
foundation already there.
