My currently longest
running working ensemble is Yellowcake (with Looney
and Gino).  We've done about 8 gigs over the course of
a few years, and at this point I feel like I REALLY
CAN DO ANYTHING with them (AND IT WILL WORK!) but
that's precisely because there is that strong
foundation already there.

I might say the same about shudder - (must have been that US tour of
drive-ins we did together!) - but in our case it is really vocabulary
that has become fixed or predetermined - what we do with that vocabulary
is what seems flexible - we have a language we speak and the journey
these days seems to be more about form. Of course, (hopefully!) new
sounds find their way into our vocabulary, but the "comfort", if any, is
that we feel free to arrange the vocabulary in new ways.
