I think most of the audience members who will come to hear such work
will be able to pick up on what's going on. They might not be able to
put it in the same words as the performer...   If you're with an
audience that's new to these ideas, I think they'd be quick to
understand after hearing a sentence or two about what you're doing.

I do treat my entire drum machine setup (with all the pedals) as a
single instrument, but I'd never go so far as to call myself an
instrument builder - not on the level of Tom Nunn or Kitundu.
Modularity is an inherent quality of most "electronics" in the same
way that a guitar has strings. Plugging things in a different order
(whether physically or virtually) is creative, but you're still
looking at the intended use of something that was already built. The
easiest exception I can think about is the person who first did the
'no-input mixing board'.
