Certainly their are people who build innovative acoustic instruments
instruments, at a whole spectrum of levels of expertise. At the same time
there are those building electronic instruments, and software instruments
too.

As I think about this more, it seems the real difference that we're
approaching is that of composition vs improvisation. The computer lets
individuals create compositions that are multi-layered. Similar to what can
be done with staff paper.

Too play with a group, and jam it is important to be able to use the
computer in a different way, that's more conducive to a diversity of
instruments.
