could be: but this is the very sort of contamination, I would say, of
culture that happens in a hyper-capitalist society: the idea that the
basic underlying intention behind the entire enterprise is somehow
irrelevant or just is in the background, and that the skill, flash,
formal beauty, or emotional impact is what matters. Of course there is
no "purity", it's all a matter of doing what is possible. But I'm
sympathetic to those who still feel art should be driven at base by some
kind of transgressive and/or spiritual intent.
