Braxton coined a term, in his tri-axium writings:

"....the Spectacle Diversion Syndrome...is what
america has INSTEAD of culture."  (he went on to
define culture as  interactive systems of life-giving
meaningfulness, or somesuch.)
however one interprets that, i've found it a useful
phrase to keep in mind.

and speaking of astroturf...don't you know: they have
better stuff now like field turf and other shit that
actually grows but has built-in drainage and sits on
removable trays, etc.
