needed two less drummers and two less bass players. period. i know which
ones i'd pick too . . .
most of the volume was generated by the rhythm section and it was
completely unnecessary in my opinion. it wasn't even overkill, just BS. i
played on maybe 20 percent of the entire gig tops because i refused to
add to the clutter and pointless noisemaking that was going on. i know -
it sounds funny to hear me of all people saying something like this, but
if i don't hear interplay and sensitivity in high volume/density
situations i become disinterested really, really quickly. you can have
your cake and eat it. i understand why drummers have the reputation they
do and this gig was a nail in the coffin . . . i chose to abstain.
all in all, i would have a hard time judging the actual musicality of the
whole thing unless if i were to hear the recording. with that much stuff
going on, it's very possible that it was better than what it sounded like
where i was sitting. i wish marco would have conducted more and
particularly told some of the drummers to chill the fuck out.
