The dialog between Matt and Phillip got me thinking about the nature of
creating art music in the age of information and how having so much music
available affects the process and the outcome. I split the discourse into
two views (which I don't think are mutually exclusive):
1. A naive stance- to create from the personal, regional and follow the
strongest impulse or interest.
2. An educated stance- to create from a deep understanding of impulse
or interest that can range from regional to global.
As I think back on how I learned music, it was part through learning from
master musicians, the academy and also from the music shop and research
through the availability of recordings. This has been increasing at an
amazing rate when you throw the internet and the immediacy that it enables.
I'm throwing this out for thoughts and responses
