Here's one idea about how to combine these two:

Step #1:  Learn
Step #2:  Forget
Repeat

Then you might have a chance of making significant and
original music.

You can also substitute the following (mostly
semantics) for #1 and #2

#1 Look outside
#2 Look inside

#1 Try
#2 Give up

#1 Hold
#2 Let go

In my estimation you need to do both.
