I'm a closet beatboxer, in that I'm usually too embarrassed to do it
in public. Not sure where I got it from - I must've been 10 or so when
I figured it would be less damaging than rhythmically clacking and
grinding my teeth. I didn't start listening to rap music until my mid
20's.
Just about every beatboxer I've met in the bay area says "Guh" for the
bass drum sound,
and attempts to cough up a hairball for the snare sound. Weird.
I don't know any beatboxers in the bay area improvisers scene, but
there is a beatboxer's scene. There's a regular "Vowel movement" event
in SF. Kid Beyond is pretty impressive. He uses a laptop & footpedals
to layer his sounds, to do "solo beatbox" sets that are actually
interesting. He used to come to shows once in a while - was good
friends with Simran Singh Gleason. There's also a fellow named Tim
Barsky who's a beatboxing flute player, but I've never heard his work.

I don't see why not. Women do seem to have mouths. My niece used to
love just standing there making weird sounds and fart noises with her
mouth when she was 5 or so. I've met a few vocalists who do the same
thing.
