The bay area was NOT appealing when the hippies moved in in the late
sixties...it just got that way when the wineries and semiconductor industry
came along....

- uh, what? For anyone else oblivious to regional history, reasons why
people have found the bay area appealing:

- Gold Rush (1840s)

- agriculture/ranching (1800s - 1930s, see Grapes of Wrath)

- nice weather (see other parts of the country)

- avoidance of the Civil War & politics surrounding slavery

- military bases and related industry

- the UC System
