I think that undercurrent is still there, if not
overtly then at least in the subconscious history of
the music - the whole collective improvisation
(emphasis on COLLECTIVE) non-hierarchical,
non-commericial aspect of things.  Think about the SME
(arguably the beginnings of free improvisation) and
what types of musical and social things that group
emphasized.  Or read any article from Eddie Prevost's
"No Sound is Innocent".  Being a red-diaper baby
myself I am of course byassed, but at least I'm
byassed for something that's right.  Hah!
