No, on the whole appealing is not subjective...there is a mean which comprises the whole of society's perspective on what is appealing...it goes like this...If the center of the bell curve wants it, it's appealing end of story...or ITAAHO (in the average american's humble opinion)

Yeah, but why do you think the area was experiencing such a population increase? One major reason was the rise of the semiconductor (and ultimately, the PC) industry. The reason my parents moved here from Ames, Iowa was because a job was waiting at National Semiconductor. We were part of a large population of people who came here from all over the world to get jobs at NS, TRW, Lockheed, etc. Most of my parents' friends & acquaintances were recent transplants, lured with engineering jobs. True, it's easy to fantasize about the glorious olden days, but something has undeniably been lost. I grew up watching the population rise from a couple hundred thousand to over a million. But instead of San Jose becoming a vibrant and culturally rich city, it's become the Irvine of the north. That may be appealing to some, but it sure ain't to me.

As you say, appealing is subjective, which is why so many people have taken you to task for this statement:

"The bay area was NOT appealing when the hippies moved in in the late sixties...it just got that way when the wineries and semiconductor industry came along...."

All I'm looking for is an 'IMHO'. Or just change it to 'appealing to the rich.'

- uh, what? For anyone else oblivious to regional history, reasons why
people have found the bay area appealing:

- Gold Rush (1840s)

- agriculture/ranching (1800s - 1930s, see Grapes of Wrath)

- nice weather (see other parts of the country)

- avoidance of the Civil War & politics surrounding slavery

- military bases and related industry

- the UC System
