Part of me would love to see that go ($1000 for 1000cds), and part of
me knows something would be lost.
It was never a great system, but the idea that *someone* had to
believe in a new record enough to invest over $1000 to release it to
the public has served as a very rudimentary quality filter. I remember
what mp3.com turned to where there was no editing mechanism for what
people "released" online.
Personally, I think a good system would be to require musicians to
listen to their cd master from beginning to end every day for 3 months
before they're allowed to release it.
