the tape fest got a writeup in their "8 days a week" rip off (whatever 
they call it) and it was similarly awful.  and it also brought in a lot of 
people..

about Derk, i seem to remember back in the beanbenders and independent 
east bay express days the same kind of thing -- it was great that he 
was putting in a number of previews/recommendations, but at the same 
time it was obvious that he was only partially aware of the music and 
scene -- i guess you could argue that's the kind of person you need to 
bridge the gap between the elite and the general public. in general i 
don't agree... i think the more enigmatic this music is the better and 
hate "educational" articles, pre-concert talks, etc... [ i think i jumped 
a few stages in my thinking here, but i'm late to the gig gotta go ]
