I think that this is a good point to bring up, since I
think it illuminates the distinction between PG's &
Damon's conversation about Cecil. PG was looking more
at Cecil's impact on the larger culture (which back in
the 60's was largely that of the rebellious
avant-gardiste, an iconoclast indeed, but has since
grown to achieve at least a certain level of respect).
Damon was looking more at Cecil's achievements as a
musician, separate from his cultural impact. And
taken in that light, he's right that Cecil's music has
continued to evolve. So relax, fellas. You're both
right.

PG:
You know, Cecil's merits, or my discussion of them, had very little to
do with what I was trying to say. I was merely using it to support some
claims I made about what I feel was a bit of jargon on behalf of Mr.
Ratliff. I was noting what passes for "avant garde" at Lincoln Center
(and trying to examine the word/idea to see what it means to people on
the list) and the irony of it all (Cecil and Zorn at LC). I was
wondering how many Vision Festivals (or Tzadik releases) would have to
occur for the establishment to recognize that there is a huge tradition
for this music that has been nourished in the lofts and basements and
cafes of New York.
I should have also noted that Wynton seemed happy to eliminate Cecil
from the Ken Burns documentary but now feels its time to present him at
Lincoln Center and give him his due. I wonder what prompted that?
