I am with Tim - it looked like the writer had just scene "Noisy People" 
where Frank is playing his clarinet like a flute. In an old thin man 
movie I saw the clarinet referred to as a "Jew Flute", I prefer "Gloom 
tube"  as Mr. Ingle called it.
