"Polar Express" and the new "Beowolf" are examples of this.
You should Google "Performance Capture" to get better info
than I can give, but the answer is yes, camera angle can be
decided later. I believe what ends up getting recorded, though,
are just the dots, single points on faces (many) and limbs (few)
that track the performance to manipulate computer models.
It's like automated animation, and some segments of the
industry are offended by it.
