fMRI is when a brain is 'photographed' while the subject
does some particular task, like watch a film, listen to
music, perform some cognitive function, etc. The brain
scan, if it works properly, and this is a big if as far as
critics are concerned, should show the areas of the
brain where neurons were firing during the activities.
This data is then interpreted to mean *something*,
and this is mainly the part that is controversial. 

Who's interpreting the data? Why? What's their
background? What's their agenda? What are their
politics? Do they believe in God? Who's paying for 
the research?
