Yes, these mega-bands do exist, one such operation was the "Boogie Knights" who are a franchise set up in multiple cities. I was shocked when I went to a second city and accidentally happened into a bar that the Boogie Knights were playing at, same schtick, big afro wigs, 70 disco clothes and all.
I approached one of them and asked "You guys play here and Tucson?"(I was well aware that the Boogie Knights had a standing one night a week gig in Tucson)...He clarified the situation, he had been hired by this guy who owns the Boogie Knights to play in the local incarnation of the Boogie Knights...A formula known to pack bars full of nostalgia happy suckers...
I'm sure that there are many other such organizations like the Boogie Knights (this was maybe 10 years ago...)
Another such operation is "WAR" a group which was formed in the seventies and now has four or five factions all claiming to be WAR that are on tour at any given time...
