of Hackman's character in The Unforgiven in a different way, (I saw
Unforgiven before I got around to seeing French Connection) as being a
commentary on Gene Hackman as Popeye Doyle, just as Clint Eastwood's
character was a reference to iconic Eastwood characters ...

I grew up on Hackman and Popeye Doyle and the FC was such a radical film
in its day...

Hackman in The Unforgiven: what a great performance. I think that's a
great post-western, actually. The sheriff that Hackman plays is both
descendant and predecessor of Popeye Doyle.
