Well I've been through a lot of airport security checkpoints
in the last couple of years with all manner of commercial
and non-commercial electronic devices, and other than
having to occasionally explain what something was, I
haven't had any problems. They do their little test for
explosives residue, and I move on. If something is sealed
up in a finished container, with preferably some kind of logo,
it's probably all right. If it's got some wires dangling, or it's in
a cigar box, check it through.
Of course, it also depends on which airport you're dealing
with - the difference between Minneapolis and Newark,
in terms of the tension and hostility displayed by
security people, is huge. I also think a lot depends
on one's personal manner and behavior - an airport
security check is perhaps not the best time to display
your antagonism to authority. Yes, US airport security
people are extremely stupid about basic electronics,
but only an extremely stupid person would strap on
a breadboard and then wonder why they were hassled...
