[NewMusic] cd cover art question

Hi all,

I'm currently brainstorming cover art for my next cd. It involves some
painting for the background, with some handwritten text and a
hand-drawn image on top of it.

How generally does someone take these real-world elements and get them
into a digital template? I'm sure the handwritten text can be scanned.
What about with a painting?
