Meridian Music: Composers in Performance is pleased to announce its upcoming performance by RTD3 (Ron Heglin, trombone and voice, Tom Nunn, original musical instruments, and Doug Carrol, cello). The orchestral and timbral soundscapes of this group are an articulation of a sound art of unusual power, delicacy, and beauty. Doug Carroll extends the cello's sound using acoustic preparations and electronic signal processing. He also utilizes a MIDI cello interface to play digital samples. Ron Heglin is a trombonist and vocalist working in extended techniques and developing imaginary spoken and sung languages. Tom Nunn designs, builds, and performs with original musical/sound sculptures. His instruments are constructed from wood, sheet metal, strings, combs, sandpaper and metal rods, and are electrically amplified.

Doug Carroll improvises on cello using extended techniques and preparations. His concerts have been heard at the Darmstadt International Summer Courses, Sound Symposium, Concordia University and Seattle Improvised Music Festival. He has also performed with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Carroll studied composition with Karheinz Stockhausen at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and with Lou Harrison and Anthony Braxton at Mills College.

Ron Heglin is a trombonist and vocalist working with extended techniques on the trombone and with spoken and sung imaginary languages as a vocalist. His vocal music has been influenced by his study of North Indian vocal music. He works both compositionally and in an improvisational mode and is a member of the Bay Area music context as well as performing internationally. He is a founding member of the groups Music For All Occasions, Rotodoti, and Brassiosaurus, and has performed with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Leo Smith, Henry Brant, Logos Duo, Tim Perkis, John Bischoff, Tom Djll, and Toyoji Tomita.

Tom Nunn has designed, built and performed with original/experimental musical instruments since 1976 and has been an active participant in improvised music performances in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1978, and has performed in Canada and Europe. He has built nearly 100 instruments and appears on a number of solo and group CDs. He self-published his book, Wisdom of the Impulse: On the Nature of Musical Free Improvisation in 1995, and has written a number of published articles on his work. Tom currently performs with the groups Reel Change, Ghost in the House, Axallto, and RTD3.
