STEVE LACY & POETS: a lecture by Jason Weiss

7:30 pm
Ensemble Room, Music Building
Admission: FREE
Soprano saxophonist and jazz composer Steve Lacy (1934-2004) wrote some
200 songs since the late 1960s based on poets and other texts. Many of
these were performed and recorded by his regular group, which included
his wife, Irene Aebi, who sang and played violin and cello. His
earliest songs set texts by Buckminster Fuller and Lao Tzu, but he
later drew on Brion Gysin, Samuel Beckett, Robert Creeley, and many
others. Included in this talk will be musical examples from Lacy's
recorded body of work. Jason Weiss is the editor of "Steve Lacy:
Conversations" published by Duke University Press and the author of
"The Lights of Home: A Century of Latin American Writers in Paris."
