This will most likely be my last Bay Area Core of the Coalman performance for some time since I am leaving on July 13th.  Thanks to everyone who came out to Hecos and the Saigon Market last weekend, this place rules and I have enjoyed being back here!
      I have some secret collaborators again for this show, so if you have seen me play before and think you are tired of it, you are wrong.  Its all completely different, and yet, somehow, still familiar.  ha ha,whatever.  come to the show, eh?

Since moving from the Bay Area to Oaxaca, Mexico in 2004, Daryl Shawn has been exploring the improvisational potential of analog cassette loops. Using a common Tascam four-track and a microcassette dictaphone, he twists his able nylon-string guitar into shapes both unrecognizable and familiar, from pastoral soundscapes to glitchy wails. With training in flamenco, classical and jazz as well as experience in the loud rock and experimental music worlds, Shawn's impromptu creations are nothing if not varied, and intelligible in spite of their chaotic nature.

Jonathan Segel is a composer, performer and multi-instrumentalist. He plays guitar, violin, computer, electric bass and sings. He has played with Camper Van Beethoven, Sparklehorse, Eugene Chadbourne, Sideways and Dieselhed, among others. Today he performs improvising acoustic/digital solo (and previously in the duo Chaos Butterfly with Dina Emerson), in a revivified Camper Van Beethoven and as a rock & roll band leader in his eponymous band.

Guitarist and expatriate Daryl Shawn will be celebrating the release of his new instrumental CD "As Promised" with a performance at Meridian Gallery, part of a 33-date solo tour. Highlighted this evening will be selections composed for two separate weddings, in addition to other solo works displaying Shawn's background in flamenco, classical, experimental, and ambient music.

Daryl Shawn moved from his long-time home in San Francisco to the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca in 2004. Leaving behind his successful Bay Area rock band Maxwell Horse, he turned to the nylon-string guitar and began composing solo works, including complete suites of music for two weddings. Returning now to the States for a two-month tour of both coasts to celebrate the release of a new instrumental recording, his eclectic talents are displayed in performances ranging from acoustic coffeeshop sets to free jazz collaborations. Regardless of the situation, he infuses his original compositions with a sophisticated harmonic touch, flamenco technique and an emotional sensibility most often found in rock. Listening to the music, you might think of Jose Gonzalez and Michael Hedges mixed with Bob Mould and even a little Thurston Moore. He studied jazz composition and performance at Berklee College of Music, in addition to private classical and flamenco
 training.

Alicia Byer is a composer, improviser, bassoonist and clarinetist based in the Bay Area. Her inspirations include nature, culture, and everything in-between. Her teachers have included Cecil Taylor, Meredith Monk, Fred Frith and Beth Custer. Her favorite color is orange.

Cheryl E. Leonard is a composer, performer, improviser and instrument builder. Leonard???s works explore subtle textures and intricacies of sounds, and often involve playing found natural materials as instruments. She also enjoys collaborating across artistic disciplines and creating site-specific compositions and instrument/sculptures. Cheryl has been awarded grants from ASCAP, American Composers Forum, and Meet the Composer, and residencies at the Djerassi Program, Villa Montalvo, and Oberpfalzer Kunsterhaus. Her works have been featured on KQED TV's Spark, CBS's Evening Magazine, and in Tim Perkis's documentary film Noisy People. Cheryl is currently developing works inspired by the Oakland Estuary in collaboration with visual artist Rebecca Haseltine, and preparing to make music in Antarctica this fall on a grant from the National Science Foundation's Artists and Writers Program. http://www.allwaysnorth.com

Felix Macnee comes from a long line of artists and musicians, all of whom annoyed their families with constant tapping, humming, and doodling. He has been playing drums for a little while now, and he thanks his godfather, jazz drummer Myron Cohen, for all those lessons. Cliff Neighbors has been making underground experimental and electronic music and sound design since 1981. Much of the work publicly attributed to him was actually done by someone else. Work that he did perform was often credited to other people, or not at all. He claims to have recorded, produced and performed various forms of sound art for radio, theater, film, dance, gallery and literary events, parties, pranks, and demolitions. Past affiliations include Mad Scientists, Deathranch, Big City Orchestra, Crawling With Tarts, Ham On Rye, Moving and Storage/Crash Burn and Die, The Haters, Peoplehater and Edgar Winter's White Trash.

ad-hoc avant-garde improv hoedown is a set where anyone who wants to improvise experimental music (except for jerks) is welcome to show up with their gear, plug in, and improvise with whoever else shows up. All instruments are welcome. RSVPing with Matt Davignon (mattdavignon at gmail.com) is appreciated but not mandatory.
KRIS TINER is active on the West Coast as a trumpet player, composer, and improviser. His music has been described as "extraordinarily inventive" by Signal to Noise, and Cadence Magazine calls him "a really compelling voice." He has performed at concert venues and festivals throughout North America and Europe and appears on over 35 recordings. His own projects have been released on the Clean Feed, pfMENTUM, Nine Winds, and Evander Music labels. In addition to numerous interdisciplinary collaborations involving dance, poetry and spoken word, visual art, film, and animation he has recorded music for radio, television, and motion picture scores and his trumpet playing 
has been heard on MTV and Comedy Central. His primary musical projects include the Empty Cage (formerly MTKJ) Quartet and TIN/BAG, a duo collaboration with Brooklyn guitarist Mike Baggetta. Kris is a regular member of the Industrial Jazz Group and the Los Angeles Trumpet Quartet, and he has performed and/or recorded with a broad range of creative musicians including Vinny Golia, Wadada Leo Smith, Leroy Jenkins, Gerry Hemingway, Nels Cline, Ken Filiano, Kraig Grady, Jeff Kaiser, G.E. Stinson, Tatsuya Nakatani, Joe LaBarbera, Lukas Ligeti and Phillip Greenlief. A California native, Kris holds an MFA in African-American Improvisational Music from California Institute of 
the Arts. He has lectured on both music and visual art, and currently directs the jazz program and teaches courses in jazz and American popular music at Bakersfield College.
Described as a 'percussive dervish' (Coda) DONALD ROBINSON is a 
technical master of the drums. He is a stalwart of the of San 
Francisco bay area avant-garde jazz scene, playing and recording with many of the area's improvisational players, from saxophonists John Tchicai, Marco Eneidi and Larry Ochs to koto player Miya Masaoka and pianist Matthew Goodheart, and with prominent visitors like Cecil Taylor, Wadada Leo Smith, George Lewis, trumpeter Raphe Malik and Canadian pianist Paul Plimley. Much of this work has featured the combination of Robinson and bassist Lisle Ellis as rhythm section: 'the best bass-drums tag team on the scene' (Jazz Times). His longest musical association, dating from the 1970's, was with the late tenor 
saxophonist Glenn Spearman. Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1953, Robinson first studied classical percussion at the New England Conservatory. During the early 1970's he served his musical apprenticeship in the jazz world of Paris, studying with Kenny Clarke and playing with Alan Silva, Anthony Braxton, Oliver Lake and Bobby Few among many others. He first played with Spearman as a duet partner during this period in Paris, an association which continued through various configurations and many recordings until the saxophonist's death in 1998. Robinson is currently playing in many configurations with a broad range of musicians throughout Europe and the US.

Zoyres performs on both sides of the San Andreas Fault this week - inscenic Bolinas, and then in San Francisco's Japantown.  Our Japantowngig is in the with some former San Franciscans who are now visitingfrom New York - Loren Dempster and Gabriel Forestieri. About William Hooker:
Black drummer William Hooker, who moved to New York in 1974, remained
fundamentally faithful to the aesthetic of free-jazz (despite a passion for
exoteric/spiritual themes), starting with the double-LP Is Eternal Life (may
1975), a set of collaborations with other improvisers (including tenor
saxophonists David Murray and David Ware. Rediscovered by Sonic Youth's
guitarist Thurston Moore for the rock audience, Hooker returned to a more
abstract and free-form kind of creative improvisation in the main works of
his prolific middle age: Darkness (november 1992) and The Spirits Return
(april 1994) on the live Radiation, by Hooker's band featuring Donald Miller
(Borbetomagus), electronic musician Brian Doherty, Compo, Kono; a duet with
Moore (Sirius) and an electroacoustic duet with guitarist Elliott Sharp (The
Hat) on Shamballa (1993), and recordings with Zeena Parkins, Billy Bang, and
Lee Renaldo (Sonic Youth), DJ Olive, and Christian Marclay.

The albums with Ranaldo were heavily influenced by his screeching sounds,
just like the albums with Donald Miller were heavily influenced by his
turbulent wall of noise. Armageddon (february 1995) marked a change in
direction, both because the improvisations turned towards a more
sophisticated kind of soundpainting and because the stylistic palette
expanded dramatically, ranging from a dadaistic duet with turntablist Gregor
"DJ Olive" Asch to the 16-minute free jam State Secrets for drums and two
guitars.

About the film:
Oscar Micheaux was an independent filmmaker and entrepeneur, whose earliest
and most significant films were responses to D.W. Griffith's "Birth of a
Nation," portraying the African-American struggle against white racism and
the KKK. These films were "Within Our Gates" (1919) and "Symbol of the
Unconquered" (1920), both lost for decades and restored in the 1990s. In
Symbol of the Unconquered, the black hero holds his ground and chivalrously
protects a lovely light-skinned mulatta neighbor (who is passing as white)
as a local gang of thieves and hooded, torch-carrying Klansmen plots to
frighten him, steal his land and finally, to kill him. Though how they do it
remains unknown due to a key missing reel, the amorous "black" couple
emerges from the ordeal unscathed and thrilled to discover their shared
racial identity. Laced within these (and many other) Micheaux melodramas are
themes of inter- and intra-racial tensions and hatred, many of which are
expressed sexually.

This quintet featuring five idiosyncratic, skilled improvisers from the
bay area scene creates a music that tempers microscopic detail and nuance
with bloodyminded humor and chaos. Bizarre studies in insanity and
asymmetry featuring vocals, the entire range of the clarinet family,
trumpet and duelling percussionists.

Dulcimer - Ellery Royston
Ellery Royston is a composer living in Oakland. She has a BA from Mills College in Electronic Music Composition, teaches knitting, and her favorite thing right now is to play music with Miss Sarah Elena Palmer.
Voices - Sarah Elena Palmer
Sarah Elena Palmer is a singer, composer, and poet living in Oakland. She has her BA in Music from Mills College. Her musical heroes are also her friends.

After working as both a sound designer and engineer at Emerson College, and receiving a BA in Audio/ Radio Ronald began to foster an appetite for alternative forms of sensory exploration. Living and working as a Media artist and Sonic Sculptor in San Francisco Ronald now works on a variety of solo efforts as well as collaborating with both national and international artists.
Under the monikers ?0010 reversed? and ? the battery davis? Rose juxtaposes found sounds, circuit bent instruments, synthesis, and prepared instruments. Weaving delicate yet methodical constructions that progress in an arc, he draws upon influences ranging from music concrete, hip-hop, to tape music.
His media and installation work has focused on the exploration of socially understood relationships. Covering topics ranging from the family dynamics of children calling home, to the use of violence in cartoons as implicit of the nature of violence in our culture. Using software to create generative visual content, Ronald shaped meaning through his integration of sonic texture.
In recent years Rose has taken an interest in circuit bending, along with building hand made electronic instruments. Continuing to grow as an artist Ronald has taken old ideas and attempted to seek out new approaches, by removing expectation he hopes to continue to search out new modes of aesthetic experience.

Founded in 1965 and still active today, the Association for the  
Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) is an American institution  
with an international reputation. From its working-class roots on the  
South Side of Chicago, the AACM went on to forge an extensive legacy  
of cultural and social experimentation, crossing both musical and  
racial boundaries. The success of individual members and ensembles  
such as Muhal Richard Abrams, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and Anthony  
Braxton has been matched by the enormous influence of the collective  
itself in inspiring a generation of musical experimentalists. George  
E. Lewis, who joined the collective as a teenager in 1971, establishes  
the full importance and vitality of the AACM with this communal  
history, written with a symphonic sweep that draws on a cross- 
generational chorus of voices and a rich collection of rare images.

Faced with shrinking economic opportunities in Chicago and a  
segregated music industry, the original members of the AACM found  
inspiration in the civil rights movement's call for change through  
self-determination and collective action. These musicians pooled their  
individual strengths in a new organization powerfully committed to a  
forward-thinking approach to musical creation and performance.  
Involving a range of experimental methods, from invented instruments  
and unusual musical scores to improvisation and the early use of  
computers, the AACM challenged the borders separating classical music  
and jazz.

Moving from Chicago to New York to Paris, and from founding member  
Steve McCall?s kitchen table to Carnegie Hall, A Power Stronger Than  
Itself uncovers a vibrant, multicultural universe and brings to light

  The original toy killers consisted of Charles k. Noyes and Mark Miller
(both on drums), featuring various cohorts like Arto Lindsay, John Zorn,
Bill Laswell, Elliott Sharp,  (as Mark would say, "anybody who would lower
themselves to playing with us.") The band started as an improvised music duo
of clattering percussion, fireworks and noise before transforming itself
into a messy no wave band featuring the creme of the '80s NYC downtown
scene. Tonight's homage paying ensemble, features Miller and Noyes, with
Henry Kaiser (guitar), Allen Whitman (bass), Anantha R. Krishnan
(mridangam), and Chris Muir (Buchla synth). Flavorpill writes about

noise is a matter of texture and timbre not just plugging in your effects

 Vinny Golia <http://www.myspace.com/vinnygolia&#160;&#160;> , the
internationally noted multi-instrumentalist, composer and bandleader has
become an important contributor to the vanguard of creative music. As a
composer he fuses the rich heritage of jazz, contemporary classical and
world music into his own unique compositions. Putting down the paint brushes
of a visual artist in 1971, Golia devoted himself full-time to music and has
since evolved into one of the world's most celebrated creative jazz artists.
At the forefront of improvised music, he plays twenty different woodwinds,
plus various ethnic aerophones. Golia performs a trio with Damon Smith
(bass) and Weasel Walter (drums). Local clarinettist, Alicia Byer opens the
show with solos and duos with other improvisers.
