The Arab Orchestra of San Francisco was founded with a specific vision in mind for the repertoire and the sound that it would offer. The repertoire of the AOSF is chosen from among the most demanding Arabic art pieces. The members of the orchestra are musicians with a solid background and the sound of the orchestra relies on the strength of each individual player, not just when they perform composed and improvised solos, but also when the entire orchestra is performing. Performers include: Vince Delgado, Percussion; Emily Packard, Violin; Heather Vorwerck, Cello; Ryan Greene-Roesel, Nay (Arabic reed flute); Susanna Goldenstein, Percussion; and Saed Muhssin, Artistic director, Oud (Arabic 11 string fretless lute). Concert funded in part by the Phyllis C. Wattis Foundation. Food donated by La Mediterranee. This event will also be the CD release of Earth Music - Ten Years of Meridian Music: Composers in Performance, a compilation of 14 tracks from the first ten years of our music series to be released on Innova Records. Composers/performers featured on the album: Vinny Golia, John Bischoff, Matthew Sperry, Damon Smith, Hugh Livingston, Carla Kihlstedt, Pauline Oliveros, Ben Goldberg, John Schott, Shoko Hikage, Frank Gratkowski, Sara Shoenbeck, Ellen Burr, Viv Corringham, Jon Raskin, Tom Bickley, Bob Marsh, Philip Gelb, Jie Ma, and Theresa Wong. meridian gallery 535 powell street (b/t sutter & bush) san francisco, ca 94108 www.meridiangallery.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <292041.14577.qm@web59001.mail.re1.yahoo.com> ...Assuming, I suppose. But there are two shows this week I'll be playing at. The first one will be a nice solo show opening for the Pink Mountain album release show. Deets as follows: Thursday, the 16th of July, 2009: -Pink Mountain (Semi-supergroup with John Shiurba, Gino Robair, Scott Rosenberg, Kyle Bruckmann and Sam Coomes) -Eyes (Semi-psychedelic rock group) -Moe! Staiano (Semi-solo percussion) The Hemlock Tavern 1131 Polk Street (@ Hemlock) San Francisco, California 9:02 PM, 21+, $7.00 Then, the next night, I'll be part of Polly Moller's FLIP QUARTET at a cool book store, and here are those deets: Friday, the 17th of July, 2009: The Flip Quartet The Flip Quartet is a composition by Polly Moller which will be brought to life by Amar Chaudhary, Travis Johns, Suki O'Kane, and Moe! Staiano. The performers will explore the four cardinal directions (north/east/south/west) and their medieval elemental correspondences (earth/air/fire/water) with objects, instruments, and text chosen by the improvisers following guidelines in the score. The audience will be seated inside the perimeter of the improvisation, or allowed to wander around, and the performers will circle around them, raising energy and creating elemental harmony in the space. The audience should watch out for the "flip" element in The Flip Quartet -- the act of flipping over timers will provide duration markers for the improvisation, and the players will be encouraged to flip over anything they can during the performance. Looney, Bob Marsh, Jim Ryan, Leif Shackleford, Karen Stackpole, Andrew Voigt. The Left Coast Improv Group created in 2001 (LCIG) is a chamber performance ensemble with a difference. Its mission is to present high quality, totally improvised works for the enjoyment of its audience and the pleasure of its participants. LCIGs pieces in concert and on record are examples of spontaneous composition. Its approach is non-hierarchical. All the players are composers and directors. There is no leader.Although Jim Ryan handles the administrative work; he is simply another player when it comes to making the music. In Deleuzian terms this group is based on a rhizomaticrather than arboreal(authoritarian) structure. Musically this means that the players respond as individuals, making decisions about what to play creating the music in the moment. They react to one another and the over all sound rather than being bound by a composer, score, or conductor. Musical experience and trust amongst the players is required for this to create good music. The concept of improvised group composition is certainly not new. No doubt ensemble playing originated in this manner until it eventually become codified in various written and unwritten patterns, rules & compositions, and eventurally came to be regarded more as a formalization in thought or notation, rather than the creation of sounds to be heard. The San Francisco Bay Area has been one of the major seed beds of improvised music for some time. And the Left Coast Improv Group is dedicated to the continued invention and dissemination of this music. more information for LCIG more information for Tom Nunn more information for Doug Carroll more information for Michael Cooke more information for Ron Heglin more information for Darren Johnston more information for Scott Looney more information for Bob Marsh more information for Jim Ryan more information for Karen Stackpol Jim Ryan 550 24th St. Ste 1014 Oakland, CA 94612 510-645-1894 www.bayimproviser.com/jimryan http://www.myspace.com/forwardenergy http://www.edgetonerecords.com/ryan.html http://www.myspace.com/thespiritmovesus http://www.myspace.com/leftcoastimprovgroup http://www.flux53.com/FLUX53/Gallery.html Jim's Art http://www.jimzeen.com/index2.html -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
