Each night of the festival explores a different aspect of Sperry's creative force, highlighting the diversity of his art, the depth of his humor and the persistence of his memory in the work of outstanding musicians in the Bay Area and beyond. The Festival is a benefit for the Matthew Sperry Memorial Fund, which contributes to the support of Lila Sperry, who at age two lost her father when he was killed by an inattentive driver while riding his bicycle to work. The Bay Area creative music community will descend on the Luggage Store not simply in remembrance and reunion, but as a catalyst for new work and uncommon musical events. The Strong Moon concert features works for large ensemble and the reprise of a composition based on Matthew Sperry's quick sketch of a Jurassic karaoke machine called "Treasure Mouth." Treasure Mouth requires a band to follow along to lyrics as fast as they can be written out for them by others, with predictably unpredictable, and hilarious, results. ******************************** Outsound Presents is a emerging non-profit volunteer collective of explorative sound artists who, among other things, are involved in running performance venues, recording labels, and other D.I.Y. endeavors. Gail Brand is one of our favorite improvisors, and we're very happy that she agreed to come over from London for this year's Matthew Sperry Festival. Locally she's admired for Supermodel, Supermodel, a collaboration with Matthew Sperry, Tim Perkis, Gino Robair and John Shiurba, the surviving members of which will be playing with her tonight, and for her outrageous trombone/voice duo with Morgan Guberman, also on tonight's program. Her official bio fills in more details of her worldwide renown: Born in London, 1971, Gail has been a trombonist since the age of 9. A former student at Middlesex University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, she is a commissioned composer and has performed on the international jazz and improvising scene since the early 1990s. Past and present collaborators include , Billy Jenkins, Mark Sanders, Morgan Guberman, Elton Dean, Phil Minton, Pat Thomas, Lol Coxhill, Veryan Weston, Oren Marshall, Maggie Nichols, Luc Ex and countless others. With a growing number of acclaimed CDs under her own name, she appears on many others and has received critical accolades for her recorded work. -- Tom Duff. Financially, politically, healthwise, and otherwise... For me, that ride included stops for performances in New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, Sarasota Florida, and Madrid Spain, with lots of dipping back into the SF Bay Area in between. My most recent adventures included YUXTAPOSICIONES '09 microfestival de poesia y polipoesia, a lovely festival in Madrid that featured myself, Joan LaBarbara, Anne Waldman, and a number of fascinating European text-sound poets. I have to tell you, those Spaniards never sleep! After each evening, there was extensive bar and cafe hopping, and heads rarely hit pillows before 5am. Still I managed to visit las pinturas negras de Goya at the Prado and an inspiring Juan Munoz exhibition at the Reina Sofia. Then it was off for a quick Gothenburg visit filled with Swedish herring snacks, snaps of many flavors, MAX geek-outs and seaside walks all courtesy of Ake Parmerud. This time of year it stays light out until 10pm and the sun rises at around 3:30am there! ...Back in the Bay Area now, I?m maintaining my frenetic pace ? working to complete the score for Jo Kreiter?s new dance work ?The Ballad of Polly Ann?, while trying to get started on my new interdisciplinary work ?Baggage Allowance? which will have bicoastal premieres next year. Sonic Demons features Lucio's signature guitar and electronic sounds in solo and collaborative compositions and improvisations with Jon Brumit, Wayne Grim, Suki O'Kane, Jeff Hobbs, Jonathan Segel (Camper Van Beetwhovern), Laurie Amat (The Residents), David Grollman, Rob Price and Valerie Kuehne. Matt Davignon Charcoal was originally recorded in 1999, and constructed completely out of samples of Davignon's 1998 CD, "5 Spots". Mysterious, emotive and paranoid, it gives the listener an experience that is both immersive and mildly abrasive. http://www.edgetonerecords.com/catalog/2003.html A love letter to tape decay, "Yellow" swims in murky filtered ambient sounds navigating from swollen drones to loose nostalgic synthesizer melodies. The sounds and techniques used in "Yellow" are a precursor to Davignon's unique drum machine work as heard in the CDs "Bwoo" and "SoftWetFish". Lx Rudis, Audible Method 4.2C Live, Lx uses a CD-based DJ system augmented with theremin-like digital processors and synthesizers. In studio he prefers using analogue synthesizers but does most of his work with software. For source material, he uses a combination of his own studio work, field recordings, 'fair use' samples and recordings of colleagues. The music he creates is kinetic, complex, curiously tonal and quite dramatic, often utilizing spoken word recordings edited to provide narrative and focus. The group's sound, a jangly mix of concert-hall agility, acoustic rock drive, and junk shop scouring, is characterized by innovative arrangements for combinations of instruments you are not likely to have heard elsewhere psaltery, banjo, and bassoon, over a bed of electric bass and bundt pans, for example "made possible by the varied musical experience and multi-instrumentalism of its five members, who have played everything from new music to art metal to fingerstyle folk to free improvisation, sometimes in the same concert. This is primarily, however, a band entranced by and dedicated to songs, which it crafts with resolute attention to voice, melody, and storytelling. You cannot be in a hurry if you want to digest this music: each song demands a certain amount of time and attention to burn its particular place and mood into the listener's mind, though it is not particularly unsmiling or difficult music to listen to. These songs are embodiments of the small, magisterial, inane, inspired, and pedestrian voices of everyday people and headlines bubbling up from a deep sleep. Bits of unwritten myth. Your weird neighbors and internalized relatives talking back at you. Jordan Glenn - drums, percussion, accordian Jason Hoopes - basses, voice Kate McLoughlin - bassoon, voice, flute, recorder, trombone Emily Packard - 5 string and baritone violins, banjo, psaltery, musical saw Damon Waitkus - voice, guitar, hammer dulcimer, banjo, piano, flute, production $6-10 sliding ******************************** Outsound Presents is a 501(c)3 non-profit volunteer collective of explorative sound artists who, among other things, are involved in running performance venues, and other D.I.Y. educational programs.
