Ayako Kataoka

Ayako Kataoka is a multidisciplinary artist originally from Tokyo, Japan. She creates works which one's perception can fully sense a dimensional environment through conceptual approaches in crossover mediums between music composition and sound art, spatial design and sculpture, dance performance and video art.

Her recent works include: "bonjour tristesse" (2006), audio/video digital media entitled after 20th century literature by Françoise Sagan; "Locution" (2005), a music composition and ceramics art installation/stage set design for choreographer Sarah Nemecek; "Klingeln" (2004), an interactive sound installation for ceramics bells invited by NIME 2005 Vancouver, Canada and its dance performance video screened at International Dance Video Festival Tokyo 2006; and "Reclaimed Treasure: History of Silver Falls" (2003), a sound work for J.J. Burkhart's Emmy Award winning documentary film.

Ayako holds a double degree in Music and Interdisciprinaly Studies from the University of Oregon, where she has studied electronic music composition with Jeffley Stolet and composition under David Crumb, ceramics with Justin Novak, and documentary film with Dan Miller. She is currently pursuing her Masters of Fine Arts in electronic music and recording media at Mills College, Oakland, California.
