Peter Musselman

Peter Musselman earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geology, and later a Bachelor of Science in Music. While working as a Ranger for the National Park Service at Oregon Caves National Monument, he began making field recordings of the cave environment, both inside and outside the cave. This palette of sounds became the basis for a collection of electro-acoustic compositions that attempt to divorce sounds from their familiar contexts. He has composed works for theatre, earning a Drammy Award in Portland for original composition, and his work for film has appeared on the Sundance Channel. His recent work is based on magnetic data from the Earth's geologic history. By using sounds that are derived from natural systems mixed with electro-acoustic arrangements, he hopes to encourage the audience to reconsider the separateness of intentional music and ambient sounds.
